Ulster County Community College is launching their A.A.S. Entrepreneurship Program this fall. While this program is still similar to the old A.A.S. Business Administration degree, we replaced BUS 101 with the course called “Entrepreneurship,” and we replaced “Personal Financial Management” with “Personal & Entrepreneurial Financial Management.” In Entrepreneurship, the students will be developing a business plan. In the latter course, we will be delving into managing benefits by the small business owner as well as creating a retirement plan. High health care costs and precarious Social Security benefits are issues that will affect the small business world greatly in years to come. These topics need to be addressed to the future small business owners.
The other business courses such as Accounting 101, Advertising and Spreadsheets will now be more tailored to small business.
Our department has established a very good working relationship with our Small Business Development Center as well as SCORE – Service Core of Retired Executives who are willing to come into our classes and speak. We’re very excited about their participation.
I’ll keep you posted on the progress as well as the challenges we undergo this year.
